Denmark is officially called the Kingdom of Denmark. This is a sovereign state in Northern Europe. Two additional overseas countries are included in the kingdom; the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic, and Greenland in North America. Mainland Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic countries. It is located southwest of Sweden, south of Norway, and is also bordered to the south by Germany. The country is made up of a large peninsula, known as Jutland—and includes several major islands, most notably Zealand, Funen, Lolland, Falster, and Bornholm. There are also hundreds of minor islands that are often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. The Kingdom of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy that has its seat of government in the capital city of Copenhagen.
