Karlsruhe is a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany. It is located near the Franco-German border, north of the spa town Baden-Baden, and south of Heidelberg. Karlsruhe is the center of justice in Germany, owing to its two high German courts. Tourists typically visit the area as it is known as the "gateway to the Black Forest." The Black Forest lies to the south of Karlsruhe. It is bordered by France and Switzerland.

Karlsruhe, Germany is the site of the country’s largest oil refinery. Two major internet service providers, WEB.DE and schlund+partner/1&1, both owned by United Internet AG, are located at Karlsruhe. The library of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the online "newspaper," ka news.de is also located in the city. Karlsruhe offers industrial, commercial, and office space throughout the region.

Entertainment And Dining Out

A great place to spend a couple of hours in Karlsruhe is the Karlsruhe Zoo. As one of the oldest zoos in Germany, it started in 1865. Besides the zoo, the area has several lakes and gardens. There are over 1000 animals, including polar bears, snow leopards and pandas. There are also 800 trees from a variety of countries, and 15,000 roses. You fill also find a wide range of tulips during the season, and summer flowers. The zoo is can be found right across the street from the Central Train Station. One choice of many for dining in Karlsruhe is Stiegeles which has a wine room and combines European flavours with an Asian influence. The restaurant is a bit hidden away, but well worth the effort to find.

Transport Information

The nearest airport is part of the Baden Airpark and is about 45 km (28 miles) southwest of Karlsruhe. From here there are regular connections to airports in Germany and Europe. Frankfurt International Airport can be reached in about an hour and a half by car, and Stuttgart Airport can be reached in about an hour and a half by train and S Bahn. The Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK) operates the city’s urban public transport network. This network is made up of tram and bus routes. The network is open 24/7. Turmbergbahnfunicular railway, to the east of the city centre, is operated by the VBK. Karlsruhe is well-connected via road and rail, with Autobahn and InterCityExpress connections going to Frankfurt, Stuttgart/Munich and Freiburg/Basel. It is connected to the TGV network, and travel time to Paris is typically three hours.
