Gibraltar is a tiny, 6.9 sq km peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean. Although Gibraltar borders Spain, it is an overseas territory of the UK, and thus classified as part of the UK. Gibraltar is widely known as ‘The Rock’ and appears as a large rock jutting out of the sea, full of holes which represent the labyrinth of caves and tunnels beneath the surface. Gibraltar used to be an almost entirely military installation, but this has gradually been phased out so that it is now just the topmost part of the Rock which holds a military presence. From pedestrianised Main Street to the quirky historic architecture of the 11th century baths, Gibraltar is a great place to live and work.

Business Information

Although its economy is managed by the Government of Gibraltar and is under a different legal jurisdiction from the UK, Gibraltar still mirrors the UK employment system and is very popular with English expats for business. Gibraltar is completely self-sufficient and gets most of its money from the shipping trade, tourism and games industries. The Rock is a global leader in the virtual gaming industry and there are many employment opportunities in this sector. Gibraltar has an open border with Spain, so Spanish citizens can easily work in Gibraltar.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There is a great range of entertainment options in Gibraltar. During the day, Main Street and Casemates Square in the centre of the main shopping district are popular with tourists and residents alike. There are many historic sites and landmarks worth visiting across the peninsula as well. The newly built King’s Bastion Leisure Centre offers a range of entertainment facilities throughout the day and night. Gala Casino in Ocean Village is an exciting choice for evening entertainment, featuring an Ice Bar, cocktails and champagne, as well as a full casino and regular casino entertainment.

Transport Information

Because Gibraltar is small and compact, it can easily be traversed on foot or by bike, which is a popular choice with many tourists and residents. There is a dedicated and well-appointed highway system throughout Gibraltar which makes travel by car another easy option. Eight bus routes operate across the whole of Gibraltar, and cover the entire region, whilst the taxi service can also be utilised to get to any location. Gibraltar Airport hosts flights mostly to the UK on a regular basis and is the only airport in the world where the runway intersects a main road.
