Officially the Republic of Senegal, this is a country located in West Africa. Senegal is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. The country just about surrounds The Gambia, with the exception of Gambia’s small Atlantic coastline. The capital and largest city in Senegal is Dakar. The country gets its name to the Sénégal River.

Business Information

The economy of Senegal is based on food processing, mining, cement, artificial fertilizer, chemicals, textiles, refining imported petroleum, and tourism. Exports from Senegal include fish, chemicals, cotton, fabrics, groundnuts, and calcium phosphate. Notable companies in the country include Senelec - the national power company, Air Sénégal International airlines, Sonatel - the major communications provider, and Industrie chimique du Sénégal - a chemical processing company.

Entertainment And Dining Out

One of the activity options on Senegal is deep-sea fishing from Dakar. You can also float Senegal’s rivers for another type of fishing experience. You can also go diving around the Cap Vert Peninsula. Ecotourism is an expanding option in Senegal. There are wonderful options in the Casamance region, with villages offering traditional accommodation and ecotourism activities. Senegalese cuisine is often publicised as the best in Africa. It has been heavily influenced by the French. Chicken or fish are the main meats used in local dishes and locally grown peanuts are used in many recipes. Country specialties include chicken au yassa - barbecued chicken in an onion and lemon sauce, Maffé – meat dishes served in a peanut sauce, and Dem à la St Louis - stuffed mullet.

Transport Information

The closest major airport to Dakar is the Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport. This airport is 9 km (6 miles) from the centre of the city. Seven major highways connect the country’s major cities. The N1 runs directly from Dakar to Kaolack, passing through Mbour on its way and the N2 links Dakar with Thies. The Dakar-Niger Railway is the country’s major rail line. Starting in Dakar, the line serves a number of cities, including Thies, as it makes into Mali. The train only runs a limited passenger service. Taxis are an easy way to travel around cities and bus services offer a fairly reliable link between major towns.
