Bonn is a city in the administrative district of Köln Regierungsbezirk, in the North Rhine–Westphalia Land state, in Germany. The city is located on the Rhine River, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Cologne. The city is a popular destination for large-scale exhibitions and conferences. Bonn is best known culturally as the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven. Bonn is devoted to the promotion of the musical arts. It maintains a municipal orchestra and arranges a large selection of national and international concerts. The Beethoven Halle, a modern concert hall, is in the centre of Bonn’s musical life.

Bonn is home to a number of federal institutions that contribute to its economy. It is also dependant on the service sector and tourism. The national and international travel facilities for the city are provided mainly by the Federal Railways and by Cologne Airport. In the Bonn area, you can see that Ruhrgebiet has embraced its heritage by cleverly converting many of its smokestack buildings, lovingly referred to as ’cathedrals of industry’ into museums, concert halls, cinemas, restaurants, lookouts, playgrounds, and other venues. You will find dozens of the converted areas linked along the 400km (250 mile) Industrial Heritage Trail that takes in such cities as Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg and Bochum. Most sites are also served by public transport. The route’s central visitors’ centre is at the Zollverein colliery complex in Essen. Dining options in Bonn, Germany include Der Spanier. This is more than a restaurant; it’s also a food store. This local favourite is the place to meet for wine and conversation. Try the grilled gambas (shrimp), crunchy fried calamari, and other Iberian staples. You can help yourself to a bottle of wine from the shelf, and pay a small corkage fee to drink it with dinner.

Transport Information

The closest airport to Bonn is the Cologne-Bonn airport (IATA: CGN, ICAO: EDDK). Buses from the airport to Bonn’s main rail station run every 30 minutes. The city centre is small and you can walk to most places. Bonn has an excellent bus, night bus, tram, and subway system operated by the local Stadtwerke Bonn.
