Tel Aviv is a city in the country of Israel. The official name of this city is Tel Aviv-Yafo, in reference to the port city of Yafo that is now part of Tel Aviv. This is the second largest city in Israel following Jerusalem; however, Tel Aviv has the largest overall metropolitan area. The city is situated on the Mediterranean coast, about 60 km (37 miles) north west of Jerusalem. Most of the foreign embassies in the country are located in Tel Aviv.

Business Information

A large portion of Tel Aviv’s economy is based on high-tech industries. In fact the area throughout Israel is often referred to as Silicon Wadi (Wadi means valley). There are many international corporations with office space, research and development, and manufacturing facilities in this region. These companies include Intel, IBM, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Philips, Cisco Systems, Oracle Corporation, SAP, BMC Software, Microsoft, and Motorola.

Entertainment And Dining Out

One of the most interesting things to do in Tel Aviv is to go to one or more of the markets. These daily, vibrant markets offer a great place to sit back and people watch, or to shop. The Flea Market offers antiques, the Carmel Market traditionally has fruits and vegetables, and the Levinsky Market is the place in Tel Aviv to buy spices, dried fruits, and different kinds of legume. There are many basic or formal restaurants in Tel Aviv, another option is to try the street corner vendors for falafel or hummus. The restaurants of Cordelia, Catit, Raphael, and Messa are some of Tel Aviv’s most upscale establishments. They offer gourmet dining, with unique dishes inspired by local produce. If you need or want a kosher restaurant, you need to check for certification before you order.

Transport Information

Israel’s main international service entry point is Ben Gurion International Airport. It offers one of the world’s largest duty-free shopping malls for airports of its size. The airport is situated 15 km (9 miles) from Tel Aviv in the small town of Lod. Transportation between the airport and the city of Tel Aviv is available by train or taxi.
