Shinjuku-ku is a ward in Tokyo, Japan. The name of the city mean’s ‘New Lodge’, and the area is home to the busiest train station in the world, the Shinjuku Station. As one of Tokyo’s 23 wards, the city of Shinjuku-ku is a major commercial and administrative centre. In this area you will find the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and the administration centre for the government of Tokyo. The place name Shinjuku is often used to describe the large entertainment, business, and shopping area surrounding Shinjuku Station, not the entire city.

With many commercial areas and administrative offices in Shinjuku-ku, there are many companies with their main or regional headquarters in Shinjuku; they include NTT East, Seiko Epson’s Tokyo office, Atlus, Nissin Food’s and Airtransse. The Shinjuku’s skyscraper district houses many of Tokyo’s tallest buildings. The twin towers of the Metropolitan Government Office have a free observation deck that offers a great view. Near the Shinjuku Station is Shomben Yokocho. This alley offers some of the best street-food in Tokyo. The popular dishes include udon, yakitory, ramen and curry.

The nearest major airport to Shinjuku is Haneda Airport. This airport has international and domestic flights and is 23 km (14 miles) from the city centre. Another major airport is Narita International Airport, which offers international and domestic flights and is 72 km (44 miles) from Shinjuku-ku. As a major transit hub, the JR Shinjuku Station has an estimated 3.64 million passengers use the service every day. At this station there are three subway lines, three privately owned commuter lines and several JR lines.
