The fourth most populous city in Switzerland, Bern (or Berne) is the country’s capital. Bern has been deemed one of the top ten cities to live in the world due to the high standard of living that its residents enjoy. The city is made up of 43 municipalities in which the official language is German, but unofficially the Alemannic dialect of Bernese German is the most common language.

There is much to see and do in Bern including museums, government buildings, and Einstein’s home. The Berne Historical Museum, located at Helvetiaplatz 5, is the second largest historical museum in the country. You will find Bernese historical artefacts that date from prehistory alongside other ethnographic collections. If you want to see the small apartment where Albert Einstein lived with his wife and first child, Einsteinhaus is located at Kramgasse 49 in the city. This apartment is where the theory of relativity was born. Restaurants to try for traditional Swiss dishes include the Bellevue Palace where it is said the President of Switzerland likes to dine, the Restaurant Rosengarten with its beautiful view, and the Schmiedstube where you will find famous Swiss specialties such as Alplermakkaronen, Cordon Bleu, and Roschti.

Transport Information

Bern is two hours away from the main international airports of Zurich, Geneva, and the EuropAirport of Basel. The Bern Airport which is located just outside the city operates flights to destinations across Europe and also has facilities for private jets. Public transport is always nearby in Bern, as the city is served by a network of trams, trolleybuses, and city buses. A funicular railway is also available within the city running from the Marzili district to Bundeshaus. This is the second shortest European public railway.
