Rotterdam is one of the largest ports in the world and is the second-largest city in the Netherlands. This major international commercial centre began in 1270 as a dam was built on the Rotte River. Rotterdam Zoo was established in 1857, and it is one of the most popular day trips in the Netherlands. There is also the Oceanium, a world of water that allows you a glimpse of many exotic fish. The nearest major airport is Rotterdam The Hague Airport. This airport has international flights and is 10 km (6 miles) from the city centre. Another option is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which offers international flights from Amsterdam, Netherlands and is 63 km (39 miles) from Rotterdam. Eindhoven Airport has international flights from Eindhoven and is 105 km (65 miles) from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Rotterdam is served by an international rail link, operating out of Rotterdam Centraal Station, from Belgium and France. High-speed trains come from several cities including Antwerp, Brussels, and Paris. You can also get to Rotterdam by ferry from the United Kingdom. Like any city in The Netherlands, Rotterdam is very bicycle-friendly. The public transport system in Rotterdam is very well organised. It offers metro, tram and bus lines. There is also a WaterBus providing connections between Rotterdam and the Drechtsteden (Dordrecht and surrounding cities). You can also get a Tuk Tuk. This Thai-influenced transportation uses three-wheeled, open-air and covered motorised vehicles are a great way to get around the city centre.
